Discovery of the Week

I've been a bit busy this week to think too much about a blog post. I've got one that I'm working on but I've had a little too much on my plate uni work-wise so finish it off for now so I'm posting my first ever "Discovery of the Week", cue drum roll:

www.mp3ify.com

I don't know how long this site will last, these kind of things never seem to last too long. It's a site that allows you to rip the audio from YouTube videos and save them to your computer as mp3 files. Handy considering a lot of people upload audio files straight to YouTube.

Let me know if you use it, I've found a few things on there that I've always wanted to grab the audio from so now they are on my mp3 player so I can listen to them on the train instead of needing to be near a computer. Happy days!

New Year's Resolutions

Ok so it might be alittle bit late to start coming up with resolutions for 2010 but I've had them in mind for a while so I thought I should put virtual pen to virtual paper and get them out in the open rather than keep them all to myself. Doing it this way means I'm leaving myself open to nudges from the family and anybody else who gets to see this.

Here goes:

  • Lose a bit of weight and try to keep it off with a bit of extra exercise
  • Try to save a little more and spend a little less
  • Spend more time with my family
  • Start donating blood again
  • Start a blog and post to it regularly

The first one is easy enough, I've lost about a stone since Christmas so now I've just got to make sure I lay off the Cherry Coke and Mars Bars to keep it off. Saving a bit of money isn't too hard, it's just a matter of doing a budget and making sure I spend less than I earn.

I definitely like to spend more time with my wife and daughter and make sure these relationships are good so I'm going to make sure I spend less time doing idle browsing on the internet when I could be spending time doing my university work. If I can spend less time procrastinating then I can have more time for fun things so that's got to be my motivation there I think.

With regards to donating blood, I went a few times a couple of years back but I'm not great with needles and seeing my own blood makes me feel more than a bit faint sometimes so I stopped going. I've got to believe that I can get over these minor phobias if I go frequently enough. It's also an act of altruism that I think that everybody can do really, it costs nothing except a bit of time so I've got no excuses really.

Ok, so that's my list. I'll come back and have a look at further down the line and review how i'm doing with them. That will help me to keep resolution number five after all.

Anybody else got any resolutions that they want to share? Any suggestions how I can best keep my solemn vows?

A Walk In The Park

Managed to find a break in the snow this morning so i could walk my dog, Lenny the Lakeland Terrier. We both had a great time, I got my daily hour of walking in and Len had a chance to eat as much snow as he could shake a stick at. Britain is covered in snow at the moment and I can't remember seeing so much snow as this in my life which stretches back further than I might like to admit.

I decided to take a few pictures and kill two birds with one stone. I made a few resolutions this year and included in them were starting (and maintaining) a blog and also to take more pictures. I think if i can keep up with both throughout January then it ought to help me to form some new habits. After that it should be automatic in theory.

So another cold day but at least there wasn't much of a wind so it was nice to be out in it with the dog. He's a good lad and likes being out in his little Parka jacket.

Lenny, das kleine stink hund.

Apologies for the schoolboy German. Just wanted to put up a little picture of my dog Len. He's very nice but very smelly. Still, he's very good at keeping you nice and warm on these especially cold winter nights so we can excuse a bit of doggy odour in exchange for a nice warming from him.

Feeling The Freeze

This morning was the coldest I have ever felt. I went out for my walk, braving the ice and what was left of the snow. There was a wind out so it felt even colder. When I got back home and put the breakfast TV on it said that the windchill outside would make it feel like -10C which I could absolutely feel as I was trudging along those slippery pavements. This is a satellite image of Great Britain showing how widespread the cold is which I liked, shamelessly stolen from the BBC weather page. It makes me feel cold just looking at it.

Wooly Hat Weather

As Nottingham is a bit iced over, it's time to dig out my best wooly hat. We've had a bit of snow locally but luckily we've not had as much of the white stuff as other parts of Britain. Despite it looking lovely when you're gazing out from you lounge window with the fire blazing when you get outside and have to negotiate the omnipresent ice on the pavements. Roll on global warming!

The messy eater

Toddlers and Christmas chocolate, a dangerous combination.

Time for bed....

Had such a busy week this week, not only have I got to be out of the house at 7.30am but seeing as my resolution is to lose some weight and get a bit fitter through January I have vowed to burn a few calories by going for an hours walk every morning this month. I must be crazy, why didn't I decide to do this when it's a bit warmer? We've got a couple inches of snow outside but I've not missed a morning so far this month so the pressure is there not to miss tomorrow. Signing off then, goodnight.
